Memorial Hospital Is Now Offering New Hope to Heart Patients

Last updated 4 years ago

Memorial Hospital is now one of a small number of hospitals nationwide to offer a cutting-edge, lifesaving heart procedure after surgeons and cardiologists performed the hospital’s first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).

The TAVR procedure replaces a patient’s diseased aortic valve without traditional open-heart surgery, using a first-of-its-kind artificial heart valve. Prior to TAVR, there were no definitive treatment options for patients who were unable to undergo surgical aortic valve replacement therapy – the gold standard treatment for most adult patients with severe aortic stenosis.

"This is an important achievement for Memorial Hospital and our community," said Jim O’Loughlin, Memorial Hospital’s President & CEO. "It shows that we are always looking for ways to treat patients who may have years ago been told that they had no treatment options.”

The medical team that successfully performed the TAVR procedure included Drs. Vasant Jayasankar, Sam Jacks, Dinesh Patel, Vaqar Ali, Van Crisco, Ramon Castello, Allen Seals, Peter Kovacs, and Ed Maybury. Supporting the physicians and also integral to the success of the procedure were members of the Cardiac Cath Lab, Surgical Services, Valve Clinic, Imaging, and CVICU. They are all part of Memorial’s cardiovascular team that has been recognized by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) with the highest possible rating for heart surgery, three stars.

“This is just another example of the quality care our Heart Center offers to our patients every day,” Mr. O’Loughlin said.
