Going to the grocery store when you are hungry is probably not the best idea. Especially, when you are on a budget. Going on an empty stomach to fill your pantry will lead to poor choices and usually leads to overspending on high priced snack items that offer little nutrition to your diet.
Here are some things to think about when grocery shopping:
Don’t shop on an empty stomach. When you do, you end up buying more junk foods and spending a lot more. Eat a good meal or a hearty snack before shopping.
Make a list. Spend a few minutes each week planning looking at the local grocery circular ads. Planning a few meals ahead allows you to stay on track with healthier thought out meals and stay on budget by choosing things that are on sale.
Check out your pantry and freezer. Prior to making a grocery list stake out what you have and what items you need. This will limit the amount of grocery trips you take during the week, and will help trim the grocery budget.
Buy only the items that you need and that you can immediately store. Even when items are on sale or “buy one-get one free” only get the items that you typically use. There is no point of buying sale items that you are not going to use and throw out at the end of the week.
Try store brands. Give the store brands a try; most times you won’t notice a difference. You can cut out the cost of heavy advertisement and branding.
Shop at a slower time. Shop at slower times during the day or evening. This will allow you not to feel rushed during your grocery trip. You can also pay more attention to your items as they are being scanned at the register. Make sure you are getting the items for the stated price.
