Benefits of Breastfeeding

Last updated 5 years ago

Everyone has their own way of parenting, but have you considered the advantages of breastfeeding your infant?  We here at the Memorial Hospital Birthing Center are dedicated to helping you ensure the healthy development of your child, and the latest medical research shows that breastfeeding can have several long-term benefits for both child and mother.  Read on for more information about how breastfeeding can help you, your child, and your finances:

Your Baby’s Health.

Unlike formula, which is derived from cow’s milk, breast milk is completely natural and is easier for babies to digest—particularly pre-term infants.  In the first few days following delivery, mothers will produce a yellow form of pre-milk called colostrum; this substance contains various nutrients and antibodies that are not found in formula, and it has been shown to reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses, ear infections, viruses, asthma, obesity, and various other medical conditions.

Women’s Health.

In addition to providing an intimate bonding experience between parent and child, breastfeeding also releases oxycontin in the mother’s brain—a hormone which helps the uterus contract and calms nerves.  Mothers who breastfeed exhibit a lower risk for conditions such as type-2 diabetes, heart disease, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer.  Ongoing research also suggests a positive link between breastfeeding and postpartum weight loss.

Convenience

Breastfeeding can help you save hundreds of dollars on formula products alone, and there is no need to measure formula, warm bottles, or sterilize equipment between feedings.  Your child will have constant access to a healthy, natural source of food that is always the right temperature.

We here at Memorial Hospital understand that nothing is more important than your family’s health, which is why we have committed ourselves to providing high-quality medical care for a wide range of conditions.  If you’d like to schedule a tour of our facilities or register for birthing classes, call (904) 399-6691 today.
