Memorial Hospital received a “B” grade in a recent patient safety survey released by the independent Leapfrog Group. To put that in perspective one Jacksonville Hospital received an “A,” Memorial received a “B,” three hospitals received a “C” and one received below a “C.”
“We’re happy to be recognized as an area leader in patient safety. Our staff has worked tirelessly to make this possible,” said Memorial Hospital President & CEO James O’Loughlin. “While we think we have laid a solid foundation our goal is to be an “A” hospital. We will learn from the Leapfrog Group’s finding to see where we can improve.”
The Hospital Safety Score uses national performance measures from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to produce a single score representing a hospital's overall safety performance.
The score includes a list of 26 weighted measures, such as the number of patients who develop severe pressure ulcers, have surgical objects left inside their body cavities or develop postoperative pulmonary emboli. They also take into consideration the frequency with which the hospital employs best practices to prevent pneumonia, infections or other complications.
The Washington, D.C.-based Leapfrog Group is an independent, national nonprofit founded more than a decade ago by leading employers and private health-care experts.
Memorial Hospital has received numerous other recognitions for the quality care it delivers, including; The only Jacksonville Hospital to be named a Top Performer in Key Quality Measures by the Joint Commission, the first hospital in the nation to receive the Joint Commissions Disease Specific Certification for Sepsis and Memorial was named a 2011-2012 US News & World Report Best Hospital.
